Missionary Service

For most people the idea of missionary service is something that select people do and it often involves going overseas to help people far away. But in fact the primary purpose of being church, of being disciples of Christ, is to be on mission to make Christ more visible in the world today. This is a duty and call for all the baptized.

While many students are involved in volunteer activities and community service, missionary service more intentionally demonstrates the spiritual role of Christian witness. Without this intentional and Christian witness such activities, as good and noble as they can be, may appear only as ethical, moral, or humanistic activities rather than opportunities to experience the presence of God in our midst and our response to the call of discipleship.

As part of Confirmation Preparation, candidates should complete at least 15 hours of missionary service in a focused, intentional activity.

Assignment #4: Hours Log and Reflection Questions

Make sure your Confirmation Candidate maintains a log of hours. At the completion of service, a series of reflection questions also needs to be answered.

Both of these forms are available by contacting Jay Cuasay, Director of Faith Formation at 703-430-0811 ext. 112 or email at jay.ctr@gmail.com or by downloading Assignment #4 below.

Parents have also suggested that youth approach their guidance counselors or teachers in their schools during the school year for additional resources and suggestions for service opportunities.
